When I’m brainstorming ideas for almost any renovation or project in or out of the house, I first head to Houzz and Pinterest to collect ideas that I then go back and do some sifting… [Continue Reading]

The winter light display (aka containers at night)

December 12, 2017

My winter containers do so much to brighten things up around here, but with it getting fully dark by about 4:30 p.m. the really brightening happens when the lights come on. I was able to… [Continue Reading]

Container designs for the holidays and beyond

December 8, 2017

I love doing winter container designs. Sure they have a certain holiday bent to them but they stay up usually until March at my house because it offers some color in a world of gray… [Continue Reading]

Growing shrubs in containers

December 5, 2017

Growing containerized shrubs has been sort of a game-changer for me. There is something about them that is stately, and while I love containers full of annuals (like, a lot) shrubs add a little something… [Continue Reading]

WINDOW BOX INSPIRATION IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES

August 4, 2017

I think window boxes are some of the most fun but most challenging containers to get right. Depending on their placement they may need to drape, may have restrictions as to how high they can… [Continue Reading]

HOW THIS YEAR’S CONTAINERS CAME TOGETHER

June 15, 2017

As promised, last weekend I banged out all the container planting (save for three small containers on the front steps that I usually plant with whatever I have leftover).   I like to show the… [Continue Reading]

5 FREE WINTER CONTAINER DESIGNS

December 16, 2016

There is no Christmas tree in my house. That, of course, was not the plan. The plan was to be ahead of the game this year, but once again it’s the last minute and nothing… [Continue Reading]

About

The Impatient Gardener

Do you love gardening? Me too! I'm Erin and I garden in Southeastern Wisconsin, zone 5. The Impatient Gardener is all about real-life gardening: the good parts, the bad bits and even the funny stuff. It's part information, part inspiration and a little bit commiseration. Thanks for visiting.

Here's some more about me.

Have I mentioned that Hydrangea serrata is trying very hard to become my favorite hydrangea? This is @pwcolorchoice Tiny Tuff Stuff and I do treat the soil to try to blue it up. This gradient effect was nothing I intended but I just loved how it turned out. Hardy, small in stature, beautiful blooms, it really does tick a lot of boxes.

My pre-sprouting sweet peas are already starting to presprout, which means bouquets like this are in the cards once again. I’m working on a sweet pea growing guide. I know some of you are way ahead of me but I’ll try to cover all the things so even if you’ve already got them going it may help. Side note: Damn that’s a pretty little bouquet.

I’m really determined to have a good rose year. I go back and forth on having these in the garden. No matter what anyone else says, I do find them to be more work than other plants in our climate. But then I see this (Alnwick rose) and I get all melty and think, “Yep, totally worth it.”

A year ago today (sort of ... it was Feb. 29) we were fortunate to have @fergusmustafasabrigarrett and @nickmccland come to Wisconsin to talk gardening and drink old-fashioneds. I think it was the last big event for most of us. At least we locked down on a good note.
