Plants helping plants: A companion-planting guide rooted in science

January 17, 2021

Gardeners love a good story and they are particularly drawn to anything that they believe will make their plants happy. This is where companion planting comes in: gardeners want their plants to have neighbors they… [Continue Reading]

Book review: A deep dive into an inspirational public garden

December 16, 2019

I’m coming to the conclusion that public gardens may be among the most under appreciated spaces on the planet. That’s not to say that they are not appreciated, just that they are not appreciated enough. … [Continue Reading]

Book review: Proving that beautiful gardens and deer can co-exist

December 4, 2019

I have written thousands of words on this blog about deer: plants deer avoid, ways to fend off deer attacks, homemade deer spray, complaining about deer. Lots of complaining about deer.  And a lot of… [Continue Reading]

Book review: Urban or not, this book helps you garden better

June 10, 2019

One of the questions I’m asked most frequently is what basic gardening book I recommend. And to be honest I’ve yet to have a great answer. But at least when it comes to growing food,… [Continue Reading]

To become a better gardener, start by being a curious gardener

January 9, 2019

I read most of Lee Reich’s book The Ever Curious Gardener in an unlikely place: on a Florida beach with my toes in the sand. I think Lee would be the first to tell you… [Continue Reading]

December 18, 2018

Have you finished your Christmas shopping? If you’re like me the more appropriate question might be: Have you started your Christmas shopping? Yes, we’re officially down to the wire, but I am here to help…. [Continue Reading]

Bulb planting continues for me. I’ve been a bit pokey about it this year, just because the lack of a mid-fall warmup has me running a bit frantic in the garden. There’s lots of cleanup… [Continue Reading]

About

The Impatient Gardener

Do you love gardening? Me too! I'm Erin and I garden in Southeastern Wisconsin, zone 5. The Impatient Gardener is all about real-life gardening: the good parts, the bad bits and even the funny stuff. It's part information, part inspiration and a little bit commiseration. Thanks for visiting.

Here's some more about me.

Have I mentioned that Hydrangea serrata is trying very hard to become my favorite hydrangea? This is @pwcolorchoice Tiny Tuff Stuff and I do treat the soil to try to blue it up. This gradient effect was nothing I intended but I just loved how it turned out. Hardy, small in stature, beautiful blooms, it really does tick a lot of boxes.

My pre-sprouting sweet peas are already starting to presprout, which means bouquets like this are in the cards once again. I’m working on a sweet pea growing guide. I know some of you are way ahead of me but I’ll try to cover all the things so even if you’ve already got them going it may help. Side note: Damn that’s a pretty little bouquet.

I’m really determined to have a good rose year. I go back and forth on having these in the garden. No matter what anyone else says, I do find them to be more work than other plants in our climate. But then I see this (Alnwick rose) and I get all melty and think, “Yep, totally worth it.”

A year ago today (sort of ... it was Feb. 29) we were fortunate to have @fergusmustafasabrigarrett and @nickmccland come to Wisconsin to talk gardening and drink old-fashioneds. I think it was the last big event for most of us. At least we locked down on a good note.
